NO MT. HALEY! -- Last half of 2014 - remaining events...

All that remains on the FMSM calendar in 2014 are Jolly Hammers events, reminders of which are sent out via e-mail to those of you who participate.

Also, please note that since that the date which the Mt. Haley Jamboree would normally take place is the day after Christmas, it was decided to cancel the jamboree for December, and resume in January of 2015.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

3rd week of September, 2014

I'm sorry to be late this week, but you know how things go sometimes.  Right?

Anyway, the only outing of which I am aware is that Jolly Hammers is playing at Bay Shore Senior Care, 3254 E. Midland Rd. in Bay City at 2:30 on Friday, September 19.

Also, I'd like to make it known that the future of the Second Jam is being considered.  Perhaps it wasn't made well enough known that we resumed after our summer break last Friday (9/12/14), but we only had one interested person come out.  If the Second Jam is something you would like to see happen every month, please put it on your calendar and come on out whenever possible.

The October version of Second Jam is still taking place, because PEANUT is still bringing people in.  I know that many people are going to be at the fall concert that evening, and attending and supporting our concert series is certainly encouraged!

We will be evaluating the level of interest in Second Jam over the next few months in order to determine what to do, so, please make your feelings known.  My e-mail is sugarfmsm@gmail.com if you care to send any feedback.

Thanks!
Hunt

The 2014 Festival is just a memory

The weather couldn't have been better. We had over 150 campers, about 600 people in attendance, about 100 workshops, 42 new members joined FMSM and 35 member renewals. There were too many jams in the campground to count.

Midland County Fair Week - August 11-17, 2014

It's fair week in Midland County, which can only mean one thing... elephant ears!  Actually, it also means that it's the week before the Midland Folk Music Festival, and the wheels have been turning to get things planned and in motion for months now.  Would you like to be part of connecting these two events?

FMSM has a space near the Gazebo at the Midland County Fairgrounds throughout the week of the County Fair (Aug 10 - 16) from 11 am to 10 pm to make fair-goers aware of our organization and the upcoming Folk Music Festival.  There are still shifts that are open, and FMSM could certainly use you to pass out literature and tell interested passers-by what our festival is all about!  For more information, contact Louis at 989-860-2431 or Claudia at 989-859-0335.

The only other scheduled event this week of which I am aware is SUGAR's monthly visit to Bickford Assisted Living on Thursday, 8/14/14 at 10:30am.  Second Jam and PEANUT are still in recess, and will resume on the second Friday night of September.

Folk Music Society at the Midland County Fair!

We will have a space near the Gazebo at the Midland County Fairgrounds throughout the week of the County Fair (Aug 10 - 16) from 11 am to 10 pm to make fair-goers aware of our organization and the upcoming Folk Music Festival.  There is some scheduled music planned at various times at the site.  Come out and say hi!  Tell your friends, neighbors, family to check us out!
For more information, contact Louis at 989-860-2431 or Claudia at 989-859-0335.

FMSM events for July 27 thru August 3, 2014

First of all, FMSM apologizes to those of you who came out for the Mt. Haley Jamboree last Friday night (7/25/14).  Apparently, the staff and management of the township hall booked a graduation party that night and didn't realize that the Jamboree is customarily held on the last Friday night of the month.

Here's what's cookin' for the upcoming week...

Wednesday, July 30th - JH/S plays at Haithco Park in Saginaw at 7pm.

Thursday, July 31st - SUGAR plays for a luau at Edgewood Assisted Living, 4850 Gratiot in Saginaw from 1:30 until 2:30pm

Friday, August 1 - JH/S plays at the Merrill Farm Fest at 7pm.

Saturday, August 2 - SUGAR meets at Sullivan's Restaurant, 5235 Gratiot in Saginaw from 10:30am until noon.  Optional lunch afterward.

Sunday, August 3 - the last scheduled installment of Folk Music Sunday happens at Dow Gardens, 1809 Eastman Ave. in Midland from 4-6pm.  Admission for listeners is $5, or an annual pass is $10.

That's about all I know about...

Hi, July...

Happy 4th of July to all of you Americans involved with FMSM.  Don't blow your fingers off with those silly firecrackers, because you may need them during the upcoming weekend, or at least for Evart!

Saturday, July 5th, is the monthly SUGAR at Sullivan's date.  Sullivan's Restaurant is on Gratiot (M-46) in Saginaw, and the group will meet from 10:30 until noon and work on some Hawaiian and patriotic songs, and if you wish, you may stay for lunch as well.

Sunday, July 6, is the third installment of Folk Music Sundays at Dow Gardens, and from 4-6 pm, there will be musical groups throughout the grounds, and dancing in the barn for you to enjoy.  Admission to DG is $5 by the day, and $10 for an annual pass.

I know that some of our folks will be heading up to Evart this week, so, have safe travels.  There is more info about the ODPC Funfest in Evart at www.dulcimers.com/festival.html , so if you're wondering what this is all about, take a look this week so you'll have time to make plans to attend!

Summertime is here! June 22-28, 2014 events

On Wedesday, June 23rd, JH/S will be playing at Haithco Park in Saginaw at 7pm.  If you're playing, show up at 6:31 so you won't be charged admission to the park.

Jolly Hammers camping and picnic is the weekend of June 28.  You can come in anytime before that.  Friday evening we will make pizza  on the grill again. Bring your favorite toppings.  Potluck on Saturday.  Maybe we will find some time to play music too.

The Mt. Haley Jamboree is Friday, 6/25/14.  If you want more details, click on the "Jams" tab.

That's all I have...

Happy Fathers' Day

The only thing on my FMSM calendar this week is happening shortly, and probably after you read this (sorry!)...

Bill and Jane Kuhlman are celebrating their 75th anniversary today (Sunday, 6/15/14) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland, and JH/S is playing Amazing Grace during the service, and possibly a few more songs at a reception in their honor.  Congratulations to the blushing bride and her beau!

Other than that, I do believe this week is clear, but check with your group supervisor for further information...

Picnic and Board Meeting

We had our annual picnic at Whiting Forest for a change, a lovely facility with plenty of room. Two of life's essentials, food and music, plus we also worked in a short business meeting.

It's Annual Picnic Time!

Hey, if I told you it was time for the annual business meeting, you'd probably stay home and mow your lawn, right?  This way, you get to come to a picnic and play some music afterward.  :-)

On Wednesday, 6/11/14, the FMSM annual picnic and business meeting will be held at a new venue, Whiting Forest, which is at 2303 Eastman Road in Midland, maybe 1/4 mile north of Dow Gardens.  Bring a dish to pass and your own place setting.  The dinner is at 6:30, with a brief business meeting to follow, and then music until 8:30, so bring your musical instrument (or dancing shoes?) along.

On Thursday, 6/12/14, SUGAR plays at Bickford Assisted Living on Mackinaw in Saginaw from 10:30 until 11:30.  Bring along Sets A-G and Set X if you're coming.  Thanks to Joan H. for filling in at Sullivan's last Saturday!

Also, please take note that the 2nd Jam and PEANUT are in recess for the summer and will NOT be held this week.  These activities will resume on the 2nd Friday of September.

That's all I know...

JH

First week of June

Here's what to expect...

Sunday, 6/1/14, is the Dow Gardens experience.  From 4-6pm, there will be groups scattered about the grounds,  playin', singin', and dancin'.  Come out for a stroll around the place and check it all out.  Admission is $5, or an annual pass can be had for $10.

Saturday, 6/7/14, SUGAR meets at Sullivan's on M-46 in Saginaw from 10:30 until noon.  The same options exist as at Dow Gardens, but, you may want to substitute listenin' for dancin'.  No cover charge, but having a meal or something to drink helps keep the hosts happy.

Hi, FMSM members,

In our last newsletter, that you should have received via U.S. Mail or E-mail, I put in an article regarding our upcoming election and a need for candidates to serve on the Board.  We need at least three (3) candidates for a term of three (3) years beginning in June in the year of election.  There are approximately 9 to 10 monthly meetings a year that are held on the second (2nd) Wednesday of the month.

If you would like to enhance the Folk Music Society of Midland with your knowledge, new ideas and help continue the growth of our folk culture in the Midland area, this is your chance to become involved.

Please send a brief biography of yourself of your involvement with the FMSM (i.e. if you play with one of our groups, attend concerts/festivals, are a dancer, etc.) to Katzmakl@ymail.com.  I, also, need an updated bio from any current Board Member(s) planning on running again.

The deadline for this information is April 30, 2014. The election will be held at our annual meeting on June 11, 2014.
